This course intends to put students in conversation with many classical texts of philosophy, narrative, scriptural exegesis, liturgy, law, and mysticism from the Jewish tradition. The social circumstances of the Jews who produce these works, as well as the ways these texts have shaped a variety of Jewish social identities and differing Judaisms will be explored using the academic tools of humanistic and social scientific studies. No background in the study of Judaism is required. This course is open to First Year students.
